- VeryDarkMan alleged that President Tinubu was planning for a third term beyond 2027
- He cited APC’s political dominance as a sign of power consolidation
- The claims sparked debate, though no official response was issued
Nigerian content creator VeryDarkMan has stirred controversy after suggesting that President Bola Tinubu may be positioning himself for a potential third term in office beyond the 2027 general elections.
In a video shared on his Instagram page on Monday, the social media personality alleged that recent political developments point to ambitions extending beyond a second term. According to him, the current political landscape indicates preparations not just for 2027, but for continued leadership into the next decade.
“I don’t think this campaign is about 2027 anymore,” he said in the video. “Tinubu wants to rule for a third term.”
VeryDarkMan based his claims on what he described as the growing dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) across Nigeria’s political structure. He pointed to the party’s influence among state governors and lawmakers as a sign of increasing consolidation of power.
According to him, with a large number of governors and members of the National Assembly aligned with the APC, the political environment could favour the ruling party heavily in future elections. He further argued that such dominance could pave the way for what he described as a “one-party system”.
However, his remarks have drawn scrutiny, as Nigeria’s constitution currently limits presidents to a maximum of two terms in office. Any attempt to secure a third term would require significant constitutional amendments, a process that involves both the National Assembly and approval from a majority of state legislatures.
Political analysts note that while concerns about party dominance and democratic balance are not new in Nigeria, claims of a third-term agenda remain speculative without concrete evidence or official policy direction.
As of the time of reporting, there has been no official response from the presidency or the APC regarding the allegations made in the video.
The comments have nonetheless triggered conversations online, reflecting growing public interest in Nigeria’s political future as the 2027 elections gradually come into focus.
