The United Kingdom has announced that starting February 25, 2026, Nigerian nationals applying for UK visit visas will no longer receive the traditional vignette sticker in their passports but will instead be issued an electronic visa (eVisa).

In a statement on Monday, February 16, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) said the change is part of its transition to a fully digital border and a modernised visa system.

With the new system, Nigerian travellers will be able to access their visas online through their UKVI accounts, eliminating the need for physical visa stickers.

Despite the shift to a digital format, UKVI emphasised that the visa application process itself remains unchanged. Applicants are still required to submit their applications as usual, visit a Visa Application Centre to provide biometric data, and meet all existing eligibility criteria.

The agency clarified that the key change lies only in the method of issuance.

Successful applicants will now receive a secure digital record of their immigration status rather than a physical vignette in their passports. It further explained that Nigerians who currently hold valid vignette stickers are not required to take any action, as those visas will remain valid until they expire or are replaced.

According to the UK government, the move to eVisas is expected to deliver several advantages, including quicker return of passports after processing and the convenience of managing immigration status online at any time and from anywhere.

The government also noted that the digital system offers enhanced security, as eVisas cannot be lost, stolen, or tampered with.

Reacting to the development, British Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, Gill Lever, said the move would simplify travel procedures for Nigerians.

She noted that digital visas will streamline the process, enhance security, and reduce reliance on paper documents, while reaffirming the UK’s commitment to welcoming Nigerian visitors, students, and workers.

UKVI advised applicants to create a free UKVI account once their visa is approved to enable them to access their eVisa. It also encouraged Nigerians to visit the official government portal for further details on the transition.
