- The United Kingdom Home Office has announced stricter measures to combat illegal working
- The new enforcement actions include workplace inspections and verification checks
- The UK has an estimated 10–11 million foreign-born residents, about 17% of its population
The UK Home Office has announced a sweeping crackdown on illegal working, unveiling stricter workplace compliance measures aimed at both employers and unauthorised workers across the country.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, April 14, the department reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance, outlining a set of enforcement actions designed to strengthen immigration control and curb unlawful employment practices.
According to the Home Office, the new measures will include enhanced workplace compliance activities such as on-site inspections and rigorous verification checks at business premises.
Authorities say these steps are intended to deter employers from hiring individuals who do not have legal permission to work in the UK.
The government also emphasised that businesses found violating employment regulations could face severe penalties, including unlimited fines.
In addition, illegal workers identified during enforcement operations may be removed from the country as part of broader immigration control efforts.
“Illegal working will not be tolerated in the UK. We are introducing right-to-work checks, removing illegal workers, and ensuring companies that break the rules face unlimited fines,” the statement read.
The move comes amid increasing political pressure on the government to tighten immigration enforcement and address concerns about illegal employment across key sectors of the economy.
Official estimates indicate that the UK is home to between 10 and 11 million foreign-born residents, accounting for roughly 17 per cent of the population.
While the majority of migrants reside legally under work, study, family, or humanitarian visa categories, authorities note that a smaller proportion continue to work without proper authorisation.
The latest measures signal a renewed push by the government to reinforce compliance, hold employers accountable, and reduce illegal participation in the labour market.
UK toughens immigration rules, blocks citizenship for undocumented arrivals
Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the British government announced a toughening of immigration rules to make it nearly impossible for undocumented migrants arriving in small boats or hidden in vehicles to later acquire British citizenship.
The move was part of a broader strategy to curb irregular immigration, particularly from migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats.
The decision is seen as a direct response to growing concerns over illegal migration, which has been a major political issue in the UK.
