US President Donald Trump has accused his predecessor, Barack Obama, of disclosing “classified” information following Obama’s recent remarks on the existence of extraterrestrial life.

Obama, in a podcast interview released last week, stated that he believed aliens were real but said he had seen no evidence of contact during his 2009–2017 presidency.

“They’re real, but I haven’t seen them, and they’re not being kept in… Area 51,” Obama told host Brian Tyler Cohen, referring to the top-secret military facility long associated with UFO conspiracies.

“There’s no underground facility. Unless there’s this enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the president of the United States,” he added.

The comments quickly went viral, prompting Obama to clarify his statement on Instagram. He wrote: “Statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there’s life out there. But the distances between solar systems are so great that the chances we’ve been visited by aliens is low, and I saw no evidence during my presidency that extraterrestrials have made contact with us. Really!”

Responding on Thursday, Trump told reporters, “He gave classified information, he is not supposed to be doing that. He made a big mistake.” He did not specify which part of Obama’s remarks he considered classified.

Regarding his own view on aliens, Trump admitted, “I don’t know if they are real or not.”

Interest in UFOs, now officially termed Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP), has surged in recent years as the US government investigated numerous reports of unexplained aerial objects, amid concerns that foreign powers could be testing advanced technologies.

In March 2024, the Pentagon released a report stating it had found no evidence that UAP represented alien technology. Many of the suspicious sightings were later identified as weather balloons, spy planes, satellites, or other conventional objects.

The renewed debate over extraterrestrial life and UAP highlights both public fascination and ongoing government caution over national security and classified information.
