President Bola Tinubu will on Wednesday swear in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following the unanimous endorsement of his appointment by the Nigeria Police Council on Monday.
The swearing-in ceremony will take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting scheduled for the same day, according to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The Police Council meeting, held at the State House in Abuja, was presided over by President Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional provisions.
Other top government officials present included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; and Head of Service, Esther Walson-Jack.
According to the Presidency, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Disu’s track record, particularly his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, where he earned recognition for excellence in crime control.
Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also commended the appointment, describing it as merit-based and reflective of Disu’s distinguished career.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike lauded Disu’s professionalism, recalling his service in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and anti-kidnapping unit between 2014 and 2015. Wike further noted Disu’s tenure as Commissioner of Police in the FCT Command, where he was credited with strengthening security operations.
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah seconded the motion endorsing the appointment.
Disu’s confirmation comes barely a week after he was appointed Acting IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.
Born on 13 April 1966 in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on 18 May 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. He holds qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology and entrepreneurship.
Prior to his appointment, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force CID Annex in Lagos. Like his predecessor, Disu previously worked under Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State Governor from 1999 to 2007, serving as Aide-de-Camp while Egbetokun was Chief Security Officer.
