He made this known on Tuesday, July 9, during the inauguration of the Renewed Hope Livestock Reform Implementation Committee at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Announcement of new ministry witnessed by cabinet members
The president did not specify the name of the minister for the new ministry, as the expectation is that a nomination would be submitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation if it involves a new appointee.
Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; and numerous other cabinet members were present at the inauguration.
Recall that on September 15, 2023, President Tinubu announced the establishment of the Presidential Committee focused on reforming the livestock industry and finding enduring solutions to the ongoing conflicts between herders and farmers nationwide.
Netizens react to creation of new Ministry of Livestock Development
The creation of the new ministry has resulted in an outcry on social media, with netizens expressing their concerns about the new development.
“What then happens to the ministry of agriculture? Shouldn’t this ministry fall under it, they keep on duplicating offices without proper functionality…we are just not serious in this country,” Lucky Man tweeted.
“What a misplaced priority..shame on all of them,” Jamesbondlas added.
“Is this supposed to be a sub branch of the Ministry of Agriculture?
He can as well create Ministry of plants and horticulture, as well as the Ministry of Shift Cultivation and Deforestation,” Ani shared on X.
“Based on the increasing depreciation of the Naira against other currencies, even amongst its peers in West Africa, wouldn’t it make a better sense to diversify our economy by investing in creating a frictionless corridor for herders and farmers to coexist in a supervisory dept of livestock already in the ministry of Agriculture???” Imonokha expressed.
“There was no need creating another ministry in that case because livestock is under ministry of Agriculture anyway. Now a new Yoruba minister and another permanent secretary plus plenty PAs and Assistants will be appointed,” Osquare added on X.
“I think the main aim is to make it more effective. For years, what have the Ministry achieved in Livestock development?” Ajibola Ololade commented.
“Because they have been appointing politicians into the ministry of agriculture,” Osquare further added.
