- TheRadar compiled public reactions, with many arguing that the petrol price remained out of reach for many Nigerians
Reactions have poured in from Nigerians following Dangote Petroleum Refinery's decision to reduce the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, by two per cent. The new price set at N970 per litre marked a decrease from the previous N990 per litre.
The price cut, announced over the weekend, was described as a gesture to appreciate the good people of Nigeria according to a statement from Anthony Chiejina, the Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer at Dangote Petroleum Refinery.
Dangote reduces petrol prices from N990 to N970
Chiejina said, “Dangote Petroleum Refinery has effected a reduction in the prevailing price of its PMS from N990 per litre to N970 per litre for the marketers.
“As the year comes to an end, this is our way of appreciating the good people of Nigeria for their unwavering support in making the refinery a dream come true. In addition, this is to thank the government for its support as this will complement the measures put in place to encourage domestic enterprise for our collective wellbeing.
“While the refinery would not compromise on the quality of its petroleum products, we assure you of best quality products that are environmentally friendly and sustainable.
“We are determined to keep ramping up production to meet and surpass our domestic fuel consumption, thus, dispelling any fear of a shortfall in supply.”
Nigerians react to Dangote’s petrol price reduction
However, the reduction has sparked mixed reactions among the public. Many Nigerians have expressed dissatisfaction, arguing that despite the price drop, petrol remains unaffordable for a large portion of the population.
TheRadar compiled various public reactions to the price cut below:
“The 970 is for marketers, fuel will still remain above 1k,” I am Legend stated.
“This is absolute n@nsense; N970 per litre for a country that produces & refines crude oil,” Daniel Regha reacted.
“What stupid games is he playing?Dangote is a cold-blooded criminal. How many Nigerians can afford N970 per litter? At this point, I will support the regime to continue to import fuel and let Dangote go straight up to hell. He's definitely the catalyst for the economic crisis in Nigeria starting from the time of Buhari,” Adannia Timothy reacted.
“The only price that will make sense is when the price of fuel sells for N300 or less. All these reduction by N30 is N50 has no impact to the common man,” PENGlobal stated.
“Let there be competitive markets, government let our refineries start working. The fuel will come down to #650,” Oluchukwu James Umeh stated.
“What kind of repayment is that, you are not serious with that your repay okay, and you can keep it to yourself,” Ugochukwu stated.
“To repay Nigerians????😂😂😂 We don suffer,” Sister Agatha reacted.
“Nigerians don’t deserve this from Dangote.. with this price I think it is better we continue importing fuel… this won’t make any difference,” That Logistics guy stated.

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) was in talks with major oil marketers and other stakeholders to devise a strategy aimed at eliminating the importation of petrol.
Stakeholders expressed confidence in Dangote Refinery’s ability to supply fuel, but concerns were about its ability to meet national demand consistently.
