The Nigerian Army has admitted responsibility for the fatal shooting that resulted in the killing of a protester, Ismail Mohammed, in Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State, in a statement on August 7.
The family of Ismail Mohammed, a 16-year-old boy killed by a soldier under the government of President Bola Tinubu during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests, has been compensated with N300,000.
This follows the army’s admission of responsibility for the fatal shooting in Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State, in a statement on August 7.
According to a post on X by a user, identified as (@AliyuKwarbai) on August 7, he disclosed that Ismail Mohammed’s family had been given N300,000 for life compensation.
“The father of 16 years old boy (Ismail), who was killed by the Nigerian Army under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday, in Samaru Zaria, Kaduna state has received N300,000. N300,000 for life’s compensation?” the post quizzed.
Meanwhile, the kid's father denied the statement, saying it is true that he was given money, but not as compensation. But as a gift.
Reactions as Army compensates bereaved family
We've gathered numerous reactions of Nigerians as the Nigerian army present the family of Ismail Mohammed with a compensation of #300,000.
@musa_kiliya wrote: “This is an extreme insult to the value of a Northerner's life. What is wrong with the Northern leaders? Isn't there any elder in the North who can speak up? Where are the religious scholars who speak out on other issues? Have they not seen this? You wouldn't buy an animal for that amount, let alone a human being.”
@flourishØØ7 reacted: “Really? I blame poverty and hardship. Look at how the man poses with the cash instead of grieving, while the army should be focusing on the investigation and holding superior officers accountable. I can't believe any sane institution would rush to make such payments just a few days later, which seems like a "hush money" payment. I pray for a safer and better Nigeria.”
@Its_ereko replied: “So the value of the life of this boy is N300,000 ? I hope Nigerians are more determined to end Bad Governance totally.”
@ChudMoss said: “Now in their mind, let all pretend it never happened. N300k equals a life . I hope Amnesty International are watching 👀”
@ummyzee expressed: “Why do I feel as if the boy dad is been forced to collect and snap with the money.”
@dart_partt commented: “Is the army telling me that a a cow is more expensive than a life? Nah. This is unacceptable. And it's embarrassing to even read.”
@director_richards wrote: “It's like burning a man's poultry and giving him fried eggs to sustain him for few days.”
@michael._u reacted: “That's how much they value the life of citizens and due to the poverty they've conditioned the masses to experience, they'd still collect that money. No be to sue them multimillions of naira in damages?”
@mena_reke said: “In the north they can compensate them but anywhere else they'll say there were no killings. One Nigeria.”
@thefoodnetworking2 replied: “The dad collected the money and posed for camera? Money wey he suppose shove into the nose of the person that delivered it… deadi bodi go surplus!”
