  • NCC is yet to confirm approval of the new pricing

Starlink Nigeria, Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, has announced another price hike, increasing its Residential Plan subscription from ₦38,000 to ₦75,000 per month.

The development comes just a month after the company suspended a similar price adjustment following objections from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

In October, the NCC accused Starlink of failing to obtain regulatory approval before announcing a price increase, which the commission deemed a violation of Nigerian telecom regulations. It remains unclear whether the NCC approved this latest increment.

In a message to its customers, Starlink justified the price increase as a necessary step to improve its services.

“To continue enhancing the Starlink network and delivering reliable, high-quality service across Nigeria, we are adjusting our monthly subscription prices,” the company said.

The company added that the new pricing for current customers will take effect from January 27, 2025, while new subscribers will pay the revised rates immediately.

“If you do not wish to continue your service, you can cancel at any time,” Starlink stated.

New pricing structure

  • Residential plan: ₦75,000 per month (previously ₦38,000)
  • Regional roaming plan: ₦167,000 per month
  • Global roaming plan: ₦717,000 per month

The NCC has yet to confirm whether the latest price hike has been approved, but many industry stakeholders speculate that Starlink would not risk another unapproved increment.

In September, the NCC issued a disclaimer, stating that Starlink’s earlier price announcement violated Sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, and the company’s licensing conditions.

The regulator also warned that Starlink would face sanctions for the infraction.

This latest price hike may reignite debates within the telecom sector, especially as local operators continue to push for tariff increases for data and voice services, which the NCC has not approved.

Stakeholders had previously criticised the NCC for allegedly favouring Starlink, accusing the Commission of double standards in its regulatory practices.

Starlink’s new pricing is expected to spark further conversations about the affordability and regulation of internet services in Nigeria.

Elon Musk’s Starlink suspends new orders in Nigeria over price increase dispute

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that orders for Elon Musk’s Starlink residential internet kits were temporarily suspended in Nigeria while awaiting approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for a proposed price modification.

In its statement on the suspension, the company explained that it was concentrating on enhancing internet service in Nigeria and pursuing regulatory clearance for the planned changes.
