The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas has announced that the House is currently drafting a bill aimed at criminalising the discrimination between holders of Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) from polytechnics and Bachelor’s Degrees from universities.
Abbas disclosed this while addressing the 36th convocation ceremony of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Lagos on Thursday, November 21.
Abbas advocates equal opportunities for HND, BSc holders
The speaker was represented at the occasion by Hon. Fuad Kayode Laguda, a Lagos State House member, who was also conferred with the title of Fellow of the College
“We know the importance of education and what the country would gain by promoting vocational and technical education. The country needs people with the skills needed to take it to a higher level.
“Those who are going to raise the nation’s profile technologically. In view of that, just yesterday, a motion for the increment of the polytechnic was moved and by God’s grace all humanly possible actions and efforts will be put into the realisation.
“Also, we are taking steps by working on the necessary legal framework to criminalise the dichotomy between HND and BSc certificates. There should be equal opportunity for all,” Abbas added.
He advised the graduates to go forth into the world and leave a lasting impression by making the most of the opportunities before them.
The Minister of State for Education, Dr Suwaiba Said Ahmed, delivered a speech on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, the Visitor to the College. In it, he discussed the strides the administration has made to advance education.
He highlighted the introduction of the Student Loan Scheme and the Needs Assessment for tertiary institutions as key steps.
JAMB responds to allegations of involvement in HND graduates' NYSC issues
Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said it had no role in Higher National Diploma (HND) admissions or National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation.
The Board advised the public to ignore allegations levied against it, and clarified that its mandate does not include postgraduate or Higher National Diploma (HND) admissions.
