The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, March 11, unveiled new electrification projects in the Gbaji-Seme and Owode-Apa areas of Badagry West Local Council Development Area, aimed at enhancing electricity supply for thousands of homes and businesses in the corridor.
Represented at the event by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu commended the initiative, which was facilitated by the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Hamzat emphasised the significance of the development, stating that it “will significantly strengthen power distribution across the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa corridor, and thousands of homes, shops and businesses will now benefit from improved and more stable electricity supply.”
He added, “We are not simply commissioning power infrastructure; we are restoring confidence, unlocking opportunity, and bringing lasting relief to communities that have waited patiently for improved electricity supply.”
Highlighting Badagry’s strategic importance, Hamzat noted, “Badagry occupies a unique place in the story of Lagos State. It is not only a historic town of immense cultural significance; it is also one of the most important gateways into our state and our country.”
The deputy governor further underscored the corridor’s economic potential, particularly in trade and cross-border enterprise with the Republic of Benin and the wider West African region.
“For that potential to be fully realised, communities must have access to reliable infrastructure, and electricity is one of the most critical of them all,” he said.
He affirmed that the electrification project aligns with the administration’s THEMES+ Development Agenda, highlighting its focus on expanding energy access and building resilient infrastructure to support economic growth across Lagos State.
Hamzat also noted the recent inauguration of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission board, stressing that Lagos is positioning itself to regulate and expand electricity supply more effectively.
Emphasising the project’s broader benefits, he said, “What this project truly represents is opportunity, for traders to extend their business hours, for artisans and small manufacturers to increase productivity, for schools and healthcare facilities to function more effectively, and for families to enjoy a better quality of life.”
He commended the dedication of the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Lagos State Electrification Agency in delivering the project and acknowledged the support of the Lagos State House of Assembly, particularly members representing Badagry Constituencies I and II.
Concluding, Governor Sanwo-Olu congratulated the residents of Gbaji, Seme, Owode, Apa, and surrounding communities, urging them to protect the new infrastructure from vandalism and take collective ownership of the milestone.
