- The Police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, advised operators to steer clear of high-value transactions linked to criminal activities
- Point of Sale (POS) operators are advised to prioritise compliance with federal regulations to prevent criminal implications
The police have warned point of Sale (POS) operators to avoid transactions exceeding ₦500,000 after the Delta State Police Command uncovered how a female POS operator handled a ransom payment for kidnappers.
Police spokesperson Superintendent of Police (SP) Bright Edafe issued a warning on Thursday, October 17, advising POS operators to avoid high-value transactions, particularly those related to criminal activities like ransom payments.
Police emphasise prison time for operators involved in ransom-related transactions
“Be wise, you may argue that you are doing business, but before your lawyer will get you out, you may spend some time cooling off in prison,” SP Edafe advised.
According to Edafe, operators participating in these transactions risk being implicated in criminal activities, particularly kidnappings.
The police reiterated the importance of being vigilant and following federal regulations that set strict transaction limits to prevent criminal abuse.
Police caution POS operators against being used
SP Edafe recalled a situation where a POS operator facilitated a ransom payment of ₦4,000,000 for kidnappers, only to earn a profit of ₦40,000.
He warned POS operators not to become instruments for kidnappers to collect ransom, adding that it would be traced.
The warning serves as a reminder of the essential role that POS operators play in ensuring security and the possible repercussions of disregarding regulatory measures.
POS operators are urged to promptly report any suspicious behaviour and comply with these rules to evade legal trouble.
