FG breaks down new NYSC plan with 11 specialised streams and skills training.
The Federal Government introduces 11 career streams and a new six-week camp structure.
  • The Federal Government has released fresh details on the proposed NYSC reforms approved by the Federal Executive Council
  • The six-week orientation programme will be divided into three structured phases focusing on leadership, career development and specialised training
  • Prospective corps members will also select from 11 specialised NYSC streams which are designed to align graduates' academic backgrounds and career interests with Nigeria's workforce needs

Hours after announcing the biggest overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in its 53-year history, the Federal Government has provided more details on how the proposed reforms will reshape the orientation programme and prepare corps members for future careers.

Speaking on the planned reforms, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, disclosed on her official X page that the six-week orientation programme will be completely restructured into three distinct phases, with each designed to prepare corps members for leadership, employment and national service.

According to Usman, the first two weeks of orientation camp will focus on civic responsibility, national values and leadership development.

The second phase, covering weeks three and four, will centre on career mapping, financial literacy, business planning and access to finance, equipping corps members with practical knowledge beyond the traditional orientation activities.

During the final two weeks, participants will receive specialised training based on their selected career pathways, giving them hands-on preparation for their chosen fields before deployment.

Corps members to choose from 11 specialised streams

One of the biggest changes announced is the introduction of 11 specialised NYSC streams.

Under the proposed framework, prospective corps members will choose their preferred stream during registration and receive specialised training throughout orientation.

The 11 streams include:

  • Agric Corps
  • Medical Corps
  • Education Corps
  • Tech and Digital Corps
  • Legal Corps
  • Public Service Corps
  • Infrastructure Corps
  • Green Corps
  • Enterprise Corps
  • Creative Economy Corps
  • Paramilitary and Security Corps

According to Usman, the specialised structure is designed to better align graduates' academic qualifications, career interests and practical skills with Nigeria's workforce needs.

Focus shifts from traditional camp activities to employability

The proposed model signals a major shift in the purpose of NYSC orientation camps.

Rather than focusing mainly on drills and introductory activities, the government says the programme will place greater emphasis on leadership development, entrepreneurship, career planning and sector-specific training aimed at improving employability after service.

Deployment to consider security realities

Usman also confirmed that the reforms extend beyond orientation camps.

She said the Federal Government is reviewing deployment procedures, including how corps members are posted across the country, with greater consideration for prevailing security realities.

The update builds on the earlier announcement by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), which approved a comprehensive reform of the NYSC, including a technology-driven call-up process, risk-sensitive deployment, skills-based primary assignments, improved camp standards, civilian operational leadership and a redesigned graduation ceremony.

If implemented, the new measures would represent the most significant transformation of the NYSC since the scheme was established more than five decades ago.

"Increase our allowance instead": Nigerians react as FG approves biggest NYSC reform in 53 years

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that Nigerians reacted strongly after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the biggest reform of the NYSC since the scheme was created 53 years ago.

While many welcomed the proposed reforms, others questioned whether they address the real challenges facing corps members.

One of the biggest concerns online is the absence of any announcement on an increase in corps members' allowances despite rising living costs
