The announcement of Nigeria's partnership in the BRICS alliance has prompted significant public response, particularly regarding the proposed reserve currency banknote featuring the country’s name in Hausa.

Ambassador confirms Nigeria's BRICS partnership

Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed on Thursday, October 24 that Nigeria officially joined BRICS, stating, “Yes. It is true that Nigeria joined BRICS as a partner.”

Originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, the BRICS coalition expanded in 2010 to include South Africa and welcomed new full members earlier this year, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

Nigeria’s new status as a partner with its name written in the Hausa language has caused mixed reactions from the public.

Public reacts to Hausa language on BRICS currency

TheRadar compiled public reactions below:

“What's written on BRICS currency is federal republic of Nigeria and other countries too wrote their country's name in native language. And they just consider native language with highest population in the country,  it's spoken and understood by many,”  Noble stated.

“WAZOBIA would have been better,” Eye Witness reacted.

“These northern politicians disparage, undermine other groups that make up the entity, called Nigeria. Imagine the impetus!” Moses Okpogode added.

“Considering the way Tinubu loves to attend such global events, it’s obvious something is amiss that’s why he is not attending. Surely the western puppet masters have told their puppet to scuttle Nigerias bid to join BRICS,” Maximus stated.

“Nigeria" is written in Hausa on the proposed BRICS reserve currency banknote. This tells me 3 things immediately. Yet you didn’t give any meaningful reason. Lemme give you the reason ,it’s the same reason you have an Arabic inscription on the badge of your military. Nigeria belongs to the North and so it’s considered an Islamic nation,” Fab stated.

“Nigeria is written in Hausa on the proposed BRICS reserve currency banknote. This tells me 3 things immediately.

“1.) Nigeria's application to join BRICS was almost certainly pushed by Muhammadu Buhari's parochial, ethnocentric administration. He couldn't do a single good deed as president without spoiling it. He sidestepped his country's official language and put his ethnic language on the banknote, which is exactly what you would expect of Muhammadu Buhari. A truly disgraceful excuse for a president to the very end.

“2.) The Tinubu CIA-puppet administration has nothing to do with it and is probably under instruction from the oga in DC to scuttle Nigeria's proposed BRICS membership somehow. Which leads us to.

“3.) Nigeria, for some reason, is apparently skipping the ongoing 2024 BRICS summit entirely. Nobody is representing Nigeria in Kazan. Not the president, not the VP, not the foreign minister, nobody. This is a huge statement for a summit that basically every consequential president in the Global South is attending in person,” David Hundeyin stated.

“Can you mention one tribe that is world wide spoken and even teach in universities across the world in Nigeria aside Hausa? Mr psychopathic religious and tribal bigots. Nothing you can do about it,  go hail,” Ahmedumarbala reacted.
