- The centre will feature interactive science exhibitions and educational resources
Nigeria will officially open its first dedicated science museum on May 21 in Abuja, marking a major milestone in the country’s science and education sector.
The facility, known as the NAS–T.Y. Danjuma Museum and Library, was established by the Nigerian Academy of Science and funded by retired General Theophilus Danjuma. The museum and library complex was commissioned in 2025.
In a statement jointly signed by NAS President Abubakar Sambo and Public Affairs Secretary Chinedum Babalola, the academy said the centre would serve as a hub for interactive science education and research.
According to the statement, the facility “would provide a dynamic space for interactive exhibitions, scientific learning, and access to a wide range of educational resources.”
The academy explained that the museum and library are designed to inspire students, researchers, educators, and members of the public by encouraging curiosity, innovation, and a stronger appreciation of science and its contribution to national development.
NAS also disclosed that schools and organisations would be able to book visits, exhibitions, and guided tours, allowing participants to engage in hands-on learning experiences and collaborative activities.
The academy further noted that the centre is expected to strengthen STEAM education, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, across Nigeria through both permanent and rotating themed exhibitions.
“While there are permanent exhibits, there will also be specialised themed exhibitions organised on a regular basis,” the statement added.
The academy said it is open to partnerships with corporate bodies, development organisations, and stakeholders willing to support the growth and sustainability of the museum.
As part of activities lined up for the opening ceremony, Kunle Odunsi, Director of the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center, will deliver a public lecture titled, “Redefining Cancer Care in the Era of Immunotherapy and Precision Oncology: Implications for Research, Treatment, and Policy in Nigeria.”
Seven distinguished personalities are also expected to be inducted as Fellows of the Nigerian Academy of Science during the event.
