Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has given N200,000 to every Batch B, Stream 1 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) participant deployed to serve in the state, on Tuesday, July 2.
He expressed that the act of giving the largess was to inspire the 1,600 corps members to stay and fulfil their service duties in the state.
Corps members could earn N500,000 monthly
Speaking at the NYSC Batch B, Stream 1 orientation ceremony in Paikoro, the governor mentioned that corps members venturing into agriculture could potentially earn N500,000 monthly. He also disclosed a N5 billion allocation for the establishment of a new NYSC camp."
N200,000 for every Corps member
“I was told that there are 1,600 Corps members for this batch. I am crediting each of your accounts with N200,000. This will enable you to be comfortable to stay in Niger State. This is to show you that there is prosperity in Niger State. I will do my best to ensure that Corpers enjoy serving in Niger state,” Governor Bago stated.
More facilities and food
He further said, “I have given orders to build more toilets and drill five boreholes in this temporary camp. I will 20 cows and one trailer load of rice for the welfare of the corpers in camp.”
Immediate employment after service
In addition, the governor announced that corps members specialising in medical and health disciplines would be offered immediate employment while calling on others to get involved in bolstering the agricultural sector in the state.
Investment in agriculture to motivate youths
Bago pointed out that the state government has invested extensively in mechanisation, with efforts focused on inspiring youth to engage in agriculture.
The Minister of Youth Development, Dr Jamila Bio Ibrahim, announced that the Federal Government intends to empower 5,000 NYSC members with up to N10 million each for entrepreneurial endeavours upon completing their service. Additionally, she outlined the launch of the National Youth Skills Program (NYSP), which will provide training to over one million young Nigerians in fields such as technology, agriculture, and others.
“Your service to our nation is invaluable, and it is my sincere hope that you will use this year to lay a strong foundation for your future and to develop a well-rounded skill set. Approach this experience with enthusiasm, dedication, and a commitment to excellence,” Jamila stated.
Commending the state governor's generous donation to the Corps members, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps expressed that it would motivate them to perform at their highest level in serving the state.
He urged other governors to follow the example set by the Niger state Governor while guaranteeing the safety and security of Corp members serving throughout the state.
Experts warn NYSC members about cholera outbreak
Meanwhile, TheRadar had earlier reported that WHO and UNICEF held an emergency meeting on the cholera outbreak in Nigeria.
An outcome of the meeting was that experts warned ahead of National Youth Service Corps orientation camping in the country that lack of clean water, and cleaning supplies could predispose predispose corps members to cholera.
