We have highlighted the five most important developments in the news today, Monday, May 12, and present them below.

5 issues in the news that should matter to you today

1. UTME mass failure: Candidates to sue JAMB over exam glitches: Thousands of candidates who participated in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) are preparing to sue the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) over alleged technical failures and incomplete exam questions.

This follows JAMB’s recent announcement that over 1.5 million out of 1.9 million candidates scored below 200 out of 400.

While the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, attributed the poor performance to stricter anti-malpractice measures, the education advocate and Educare CEO, Alex Onyia, revealed that legal action would begin at the Federal High Court, backed by over 8,000 student complaints demanding transparency in score verification.

2. My husband won’t contest against Tinubu in 2027, says Patience Jonathan: The former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, has ruled out the possibility of her husband, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, contesting in the 2027 presidential election against President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking at an event in Abuja, she stated that the Jonathan family would instead support Tinubu’s re-election bid in appreciation for the support Tinubu and his wife, Oluremi, offered during Jonathan’s 2011 campaign. Jonathan left office in 2015 after losing to Muhammadu Buhari.

3. I’m not desperate to return as Rivers governor, Fubara: The suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, says he has no desperation to return to office, admitting that his “spirit” has already left the Government House.

He made this remark during a tribute event in Port Harcourt for the late Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, hosted by the Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum.

Fubara expressed gratitude for the support he’s received but warned against misinterpreting his statements in the current politically tense atmosphere.

4. Falana demands probe into alleged diversion of $3.4bn IMF loan: Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has called for an urgent investigation into the alleged misappropriation of the $3.4 billion emergency loan Nigeria received from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during the COVID-19 crisis.

Through his group, the Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB), Falana accused the government of diverting funds meant for pandemic relief and criticised the IMF for not enforcing adequate monitoring mechanisms.

5. UK aims for crypto leadership with tough new regulations: The United Kingdom is moving to establish one of the strictest regulatory frameworks for cryptocurrencies as part of its goal to lead in digital finance.

Departing from the EU’s MiCA guidelines, UK regulators are proposing rules that would treat crypto platforms like traditional financial institutions, with strict capital, disclosure, and governance requirements.
