5 issues in the news that should matter to you today

1. FG to roll out 7m smart meters in 2025: The federal government, through its Presidential Metering Initiative PMI, is accelerating a nationwide rollout of seven million prepaid meters, starting this year.

Olu Arowolo Verheijen, Special Adviser to the President on Energy, stated in a media chat that this is expected to finally put an end to the practice of estimated billing, giving consumers confidence in what they are paying for and ensuring transparency in electricity charges.

2. Senate expresses shock over billions of naira missing in govt coffers: The Senate has raised the alarm that billions of naira have left the federal government’s coffers unaccounted for, with critical revenue-generating agencies refusing to honour its summons.

The Senate has, however, expressed anger as these revenue-generating agencies undermine its summons to answer queries raised by the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation, OAGF, about financial transactions.

3. Sanwo-Olu unveils Purple Lekki project: Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has inaugurated Purple Lekki, a new urban development project in Lekki Phase 1.

Announcing the project on his X handle, Sanwo-Olu described Purple Lekki as a testament to Lagos’ position as a hub for urban renewal and community development.

4. INEC releases timetable for Anambra governorship, FCT Area Council polls: The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor. Mahmood Yakubu has urged civil society organisations (CSOs) to pay close attention to the conduct of party primaries and not only the general elections.

Yakubu announced the timetable for the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8 this year and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, 2026.

5. Trump withdraws US from UN human rights council: On Tuesday, February 4, President Trump signed an executive order that would withdraw the United States from the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The order would also withdraw the US from the UN’s Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East and would review involvement in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation.
