We have highlighted the five most important developments in the news today, Tuesday, February 4, and present them below.

5 issues in the news that should matter to you today

1. You’ve no power to order my impeachment – Tinubu tells court: President Bola Tinubu has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to dismiss a suit that is seeking to compel the National Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against him over alleged rights violations.

The plaintiff, in his suit, urged the court to declare that the alleged persistent suppression of peaceful protests organised by Nigerian citizens by the President Tinubu-led administration amounts to an impeachable offence.

2. NLC drops planned strike over 50% telecom tariff hike: The Federal Government said the organised labour has shelved its plan to hold a nationwide protest on Tuesday, February 4, against the recent government-approved hike in tariff by telecommunications companies in the country.

Minister of Information Mohammed Idris disclosed this after a meeting between federal officials and leaders of organised labour.

3. FG budgets N4.8bn for treatment of HIV patients in Nigeria: On Monday, February 3, the Federal Executive Council, FEC, announced the approval of the sum of N4.8 billion for the treatment of HIV patients.

The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the Council meeting presided by President Bola Tinubu at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

4. FG bans export of crude oil allocated to domestic refineries: The Federal Government has banned the export of crude oil meant to meet the needs of domestic refineries in the country, apparently in a bid to boost local refining capacity, reduce the import of refined petroleum products, and curb pressure on foreign exchange supply.

Acting through the upstream sector regulator, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, the government warned that it would henceforth deny export permits for crude oil cargoes intended for domestic refining.

5. Ogun suspends monarch for six months over public assault: The Ogun State Government has slammed Oba Abdulsemiu Adewale Ogunjobi, the Olorile of Orile-Ifo, with a six-month suspension for engaging in conduct not befitting the status of an Oba.

The decision was reached after the Kabiyesi and his victim were invited by the Commissioner, Ministry of Local Government, and Chieftaincy Affairs for interrogation.
