We have highlighted the five most important developments in the news today, Thursday, June 27, and present them below.

5 issues in the news that should matter to you today

1. FG, ASUU meet to avert strike in universities: The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Wednesday, June 26, held a meeting to avert an industrial action by the union. The parley, which started at about 4:30 p.m. at the Minister of Education’s office in Abuja, ended around 6:40 p.m.

ASUU president Professor Emmanuel Osodeke said the meeting was necessary as the present administration had spent one year in office without addressing issues affecting the university system. Both sides expressed optimism that with the commencement of negotiations, all outstanding issues would be amicably resolved.

2. FG invests in climate-smart agriculture to boost food security: The Federal Government has said it is investing in climate-smart agriculture to enhance food production and promote agroforestry and conservation agriculture amidst challenges posed by climate change and its impacts on food security.

The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, stated this at a high-level event on ‘Partnering to Scale up Climate Actions in Fragile and Conflict Affected Situations – Zooming in on Food Security’ held in the Embassy of UAE Rome. 3. 3. FG urged to reopen borders for legal food imports: The Federal Government has been advised on the need to reopen the country’s borders so that items, particularly food, can be imported legally and legitimately to fight hunger among Nigerians.

The call was made by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) during an advocacy meeting with traditional rulers and other stakeholders held inside the Conference Hall of the Palace of the Emir of Bauchi on Wednesday, June 26.

4. Trump, Biden prepare for historic US presidential debate: Joe Biden and Donald Trump prepared for the biggest moment so far in the US election — the first of two high-stakes debates that could upend the race. Today’s (June 27) showdown will raise the campaigning to boiling point, with both camps recently escalating their increasingly personal attacks.

The rivals both step onstage for the 90-minute clash, hosted by CNN in the southern city of Atlanta, seeking to allay fears about serious political liabilities. Biden, 81, faces the most concern about his mental sharpness, with voters much more likely to bring up his age than Trump’s, despite the Republican being just three years younger.

5. FG shopping for emergency vaccine: In the wake of the cholera outbreak in the country, the Federal Government has initiated dialogue with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation, GAVI, to obtain emergency supplies of oral cholera vaccine, OCV, as Nigeria battles the disease amid a global shortage of the vaccine.
