Ali Ndume, the senator from Borno South, has called on the Senate to permit Uchenna Ubah, the widow of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, to step into his late husband’s role as the representative of Anambra South.
Ndume made this request on Tuesday, November 19, during a valedictory session organised to honour the late senator.
Ndume calls for Uchenna Ubah to replace Ifeanyi
“What I want to appeal to you, Mr. President, is that we keep the spirit and aspirations of Ifeanyi alive,” Ndume stated.
The lawmaker stressed the need to honour Ubah’s legacy by ensuring it is carried on through his family, citing historical examples to back his plea.
He pointed to the case of Chuba Okadigbo, whose legacy was carried on by his wife, Margery, who succeeded him in the Senate after his death.
He also mentioned Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, who served in the Senate with the support of Lagosians, advancing her husband’s political vision.
Tokunbo Abiru, Iyabo Obasanjo, Ede Dafinone, and Abdulaziz Yar’Adua were also mentioned as representatives of their family legacies in the Senate.
He reinforced that Uchenna Ubah, who played a crucial role in supporting her late husband, would be an excellent candidate to guarantee continuity and respect for the people of Anambra South.
Ndume appealed to the Senate President and other senators to stand behind this initiative, saying, “Let us support the family to have a spiritual representative of Ifeanyi here in the chamber when the election of Anambra of the senatorial district that he represents comes up.
“This will ensure continuity and honour for the Anambra south senatorial district,” he added.
Senator Ifeanyi Ubah passed away on July 26 at the age of 52. Yesterday, Tuesday, November 19, the Senate Chamber was filled with tributes to honour the late Senator, with his seat draped in the national flag, a flower placed atop, and candles lit on his desk.
