The national power grid has collapsed once again, leaving parts of the country without electricity on Tuesday, November 5 afternoon.

According to reports, the grid lost power generation at approximately 1:39 p.m. on November 5, 2024.

At the time of the collapse, power generation had been at 2,711 megawatts, down from a peak of 3,631 MW earlier in the day.

Power generation had initially reached 3,934.77 MW around 6:00 a.m.

The situation worsened between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., when power generation dropped to 0.00 MW for at least one hour, signaling a severe disruption in the system.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed the incident, describing it as a “partial disturbance” that occurred at approximately 1:52 p.m.

TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, explained that the collapse followed a series of line and generator trippings, which led to instability in the grid and, ultimately, the partial power outage.

“We are currently working to restore full power supply to affected areas,” Mbah stated.

“While parts of the grid were impacted, data from the National Control Centre shows that some areas were not affected by the bulk power disruption.”

By 2:49 p.m., power supply had been fully restored to Abuja, and TCN engineers were working to gradually bring electricity back to other parts of the country.

The transmission company assured the public that efforts were underway to stabilise the national grid and prevent further disturbances.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause our electricity customers,” Mbah added.

Nigerian government to hand over national grid to independent operators

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, has said discussions are ongoing to transfer the management of the national grid to Independent System Operators in line with the provisions of the Electricity Act 2023 to engender more discipline in grid management.

NERC also revealed that an explosion incident at the Jebba transmission station was the cause of the latest national grid collapse that occurred on October 19.
