- Senator Sunday Katung said the project would create jobs, reduce post-harvest losses, and position the district as a global player in the ginger value chain
- The initiative complemented other local developments, including a Federal University of Applied Sciences, a planned College of Medicine, and a partnership with Project C.U.R.E. for medical equipment
The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Government, has finalised plans to establish a ₦40 billion ginger production and processing hub in Kachia Local Government Area, a development hailed as a major agricultural breakthrough for Southern Kaduna.
The disclosure was made by the Sunday Katung, Senator representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, in a statement on Monday. He described the initiative as set to become the largest ginger processing facility in Africa upon completion.
According to Katung, the Kaduna State Government has already committed ₦20 billion to the project, with the Federal Government expected to provide the remaining funds. The project is designed to promote agro-industrialisation, stimulate economic growth, and position the district as a global player in the ginger value chain.
“The establishment of this ₦40 billion ginger production and processing hub in Kachia is a historic milestone for the Kaduna South Senatorial District. When completed, it will position our district as a global player in the ginger value chain,” Katung said.
The senator highlighted that the hub will enhance ginger production, reduce post-harvest losses, create employment, and stimulate rural economic activity. “This project is not just about ginger; it is about jobs, rural industrialisation, wealth creation and restoring hope to our farming communities. Our farmers will move beyond selling raw produce to value addition, processing and export,” he added.
Katung emphasised that the initiative aligns with the economic diversification agenda of Bola Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Agenda and complements the development blueprint of Uba Sani. “Governor Uba Sani’s inclusive leadership has continued to attract transformative federal projects to Southern Kaduna,” he said.
Beyond agriculture, the senator outlined other achievements in the district, including the establishment of the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, plans for a College of Medicine in Manchok, and the upgrade of Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa Memorial Hospital to a Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan. He also announced a five-year partnership with the US-based humanitarian organisation, Project C.U.R.E., to supply medical equipment worth about ₦8 billion to hospitals across the senatorial district.
Katung urged residents to use the concurrent Lenten and Ramadan seasons to promote unity, interfaith harmony, and peaceful coexistence. He thanked constituents for their support and pledged to continue driving socio-economic growth through collaborative governance and strategic federal engagement.
