- NAFDAC seized 50,000 fake labels and packaging materials in Lagos, targeting illegal alcohol production and ensuring only safe, certified products reach consumers
- The agency also uncovered a warehouse with unregistered, expired drinks
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered illegal counterfeit alcohol packaging operations at the Article Market in Abule-Osun, Lagos State.
The operation, which resulted in the seizure of over ₦2 billion worth of goods, marks a significant effort to protect public health and safety from hazardous alcoholic beverages flooding the market.
A statement released by NAFDAC on social media platform X on Wednesday, November 20, confirmed that during the operation, the agency seized more than 50,000 counterfeit branded labels and packaging materials used in the illegal production of alcoholic drinks.
These fake products pose severe health risks, with many being distributed under popular brand names without proper safety standards.
“This raid is a significant step towards safeguarding public health and ensuring that only certified, safe, and regulated products reach the consumers,” NAFDAC stated.
The operation dismantled what the agency described as a "sophisticated" illegal packaging operation, emphasising its determination to tackle the growing problem of counterfeit alcohol in the Nigerian market.
The bust in Abule-Osun comes just a day after a similar operation in Oke-Afa, Okota, Lagos, where NAFDAC officials uncovered a warehouse containing unregistered and expired products, including carbonated drinks.
Acting on intelligence reports, NAFDAC raided the facility and seized a 20ft container of unregistered drinks. Further inspection revealed poor storage conditions, with the products contaminated by rats.
The warehouse was immediately shut down, and the agency has suspended operations while it investigates the matter further.
