- Murtala Sule Garo was sworn in as Deputy Governor of Kano State
- He replaced Abdussalam Gwarzo, who resigned in March 2026
- Garo had previously served as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs
Murtala Sule Garo has been sworn in as the Deputy Governor of Kano State, marking a new chapter in the state’s leadership.
The oath of office was administered by the Chief Judge of Kano State at a ceremony attended by Governor Abba Yusuf and other top government officials in Kano. The event formalised Garo’s assumption of office following his nomination to fill the vacant position.
Garo’s appointment comes after the resignation of the former deputy governor, Abdussalam Gwarzo, who stepped down on 27 March 2026, creating a leadership gap in the state’s executive arm.
Prior to his elevation, Garo served as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs in Kano State, a role in which he was actively involved in grassroots administration and policy implementation. His experience at the state level is widely seen as a factor that influenced his selection for the deputy governorship position.
Reacting to the development, former presidential media aide Bashir Ahmad took to social media to congratulate the new deputy governor. In a post on X, Ahmad expressed optimism about Garo’s capacity to contribute meaningfully to the state’s development.
“Congratulations to H.E. Murtala Sule Garo on his inauguration as the Deputy Governor of Kano State. I wish him great success in this new role as he works alongside Gov. Abba K. Yusuf to advance the development and prosperity of our dear state,” he wrote.
Garo is expected to work closely with Governor Yusuf in advancing key policies and programmes aimed at improving governance and socio-economic development across Kano State. Observers note that his familiarity with local government structures could prove valuable in strengthening coordination between state and grassroots administrations.
His swearing-in completes the process of filling the vacancy left by Gwarzo’s resignation and restores the full complement of the state’s executive leadership.
