The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced the defection of former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, into its ranks.

In a statement released by the party’s spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the move as a reflection of growing public sentiment that Nigeria requires leadership capable of addressing citizens’ everyday challenges while taking responsibility for national development.

The party emphasised that Kwankwaso’s extensive governance experience, grassroots appeal, and reputation as a unifying figure would significantly strengthen its efforts to rebuild the country and expand its political influence.

“As part of this move, he has also encouraged members of his political movement and supporters across the country to join the ADC, adding strength to this growing coalition for change,” Abdullahi stated.

Kwankwaso, a prominent political figure with a strong support base, reportedly urged his followers nationwide to align with the ADC, a development expected to further boost the party’s membership and national reach.

The announcement event drew several influential figures within the party and Nigeria’s wider political landscape. Among those present were the ADC National Chairman, David Mark, and the National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, alongside members of the party’s National Working Committee.

Also in attendance were notable political heavyweights and presidential hopefuls, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi. Their presence highlighted the significance of the event and suggested increasing collaboration among key opposition figures.

Other prominent attendees included former Cross River State governor Liyel Imoke and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal.

According to the ADC, the strong turnout of party leaders and stakeholders demonstrated unity, focus, and growing political momentum as the country looks ahead to future elections.

Political observers view Kwankwaso’s defection as a potentially significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, particularly as opposition parties explore alliances and strategies to consolidate support.

The ADC maintained that the move reinforces its commitment to presenting a credible alternative capable of addressing the nation’s pressing socio-economic challenges.
