- Tyrese Haspil, convicted of the savage killing and dismemberment of Fahim Saleh and theft of $400,000, was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison
- Haspil killed Saleh because he was concerned that Saleh might uncover his ongoing embezzlement activities, according to the prosecutors
- Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg emphasised that the sentencing aims to hold Haspil accountable and offer closure to Saleh's family
Tyrese Haspil, who was convicted of the brutal murder and dismemberment of his former boss, tech entrepreneur Fahim Saleh, along with stealing about $400,000, was sentenced to a term of 40 years to life in prison.
“Today (Tuesday), Tyrese Haspil is facing accountability for brutally murdering and decapitating Fahim Saleh, a kind, generous, and empathetic person who positively impacted the world,” Alvin Bragg, Manhattan District Attorney, stated during the prosecution on Tuesday, September 10.
Haspil found guilty of murder, grand larceny
Bragg further said, “While today’s sentence won’t bring Mr. Saleh back, I hope it provides his family a sense of closure as they continue to mourn his painful loss.”
Haspil, a 25-year-old American, was found guilty in June of charges including murder and grand larceny in connection with the 2020 killing of his ex-employer, Saleh.
Prosecutors revealed that Haspil, who was recruited as an assistant for Saleh and his Nigerian startup Gokada, rapidly began to steal money from Saleh’s business ventures.
Backstory to Saleh’s death
A year later, Haspil resigned but continued to steal money, even after Saleh discovered the theft and allowed him to repay the stolen funds over two years to evade criminal charges.
“Even after the defendant stole from him to fund a lavish lifestyle, Mr. Saleh still gave him a second chance,” Bragg stated.
According to the prosecutors, Haspil killed Saleh because he was concerned that Saleh might uncover his ongoing embezzlement activities.
On July 13, 2020, Haspil, dressed in a black suit and mask, trailed Saleh into the elevator of his upscale Manhattan apartment building. When the elevator doors opened on Saleh’s floor, Haspil used a Taser to shock him at the back. Haspil stabbed him to death after Saleh fell to the floor.
The following day, Haspil revisited the apartment to dismember Saleh’s body using an electric saw. However, he had to pause the gruesome task to buy a charger when the saw's battery ran out. During his absence, Saleh's cousin stumbled upon the partially dismembered Saleh’s body.
Haspil was taken into custody by the police days later.
