Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has confirmed his intention to actively participate in the choice of his successor when his term wraps up in 2027.
This was disclosed during a meeting in the Executive Council Chambers of the Governor's Office in Ibadan, on Thursday, October 3.
Governor Seyi Makinde addressed the ongoing lobbying for his position while receiving the report from the Committee on Review and Update of Public Service Rules and Other Regulations.
Makinde urges successors to be patient
Urging those looking to succeed him to remain patient, noting that the right moment for these considerations will arrive closer to the election, he said, “I may not have the final say in who takes over, but I will definitely have my input,” he said.
He pointed out his significant role in the selection process while also acknowledging that it is the electorate who will make the final decision.
“As the current leader of the party in Oyo State, I will be involved in discussions and deliberations that will guide our choice,” he added.
Makinde highlights importance of PDP dynamics in successor selection
He emphasised the significance of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in this matter, pointing out that the dynamics within the party will be vital in determining the final outcome.
Speaking about the Committee's report on the Review and Update of Public Service Rules and Other Regulations in the State Civil/Public Service, the governor articulated his resolve to leave a transformative legacy for the state’s civil service by moving from manual processes to digital systems to eliminate unnecessary delays affecting the workforce.
He pointed out that numerous Public Service Rules are no longer relevant, emphasising the importance of updating these rules to meet international standards and transform the State Civil and Public Service.
Makinde appreciates committee's efforts to improve service conditions for workers
Makinde expressed his appreciation for the committee's efforts, noting that their contributions not only affirmed his commitment to establishing a positive legacy but would also improve the service conditions for workers in the state.
He assured the committee that he would form a technical committee tasked with implementing and operationalising their recommendations.
During the submission of the reports and recommendations, the Committee Chairman, Chief Adebisi Adesola, a former Head of Service in the state, stated that adopting and implementing the recommendations would lead to improved output and enhanced service delivery, aligning with global best practices.
“If implemented, these changes will result in greater output and better service delivery in line with global best practices.”

Governor Makinde denies claim that Oyo received N570bn from Tinubu’s government
