The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has officially announced the appointment of Prince Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo.
The announcement was made on Friday, January 10, through the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade.
Prince Owoade, a Nigerian-Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist, comes from a distinguished and royal lineage. Born 49 years ago in Oyo town to the prominent Owoade-Agunloye family, he is the son of Pa Rasaki Ibiyosi Owoade, a descendant of Aremo Aderounmu Iyanda Owoade from Agure Compound in Oyo.
His lineage and royal background position him as a key figure in the Alaafin succession process.
Owoade’s career spans several industries, with notable experience in real estate investment, financial services, and energy.
He is the president of 100279 Manitoba Limited, a real estate and financial services business based in Manitoba, Canada. Owoade has also contributed to the growth of Manitoba Hydro, one of Canada’s largest electric power and natural gas utility providers, where he serves as Project Coordinator.
A graduate of Mechanical Engineering, Owoade completed his secondary school education at Baptist High School, Saki, Oyo State, Nigeria. He then pursued higher education in engineering, earning his National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, and The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State.
His education continued in the United Kingdom, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sunderland and Northumbria University, respectively.
With his broad educational background, professional experience, and deep-rooted connection to Oyo's royal heritage, Owoade was selected by the Owoade-Agunloye family as their preferred candidate for the prestigious title of Alaafin.
Owoade’s appointment comes after a period of uncertainty regarding the succession of the Alaafin of Oyo, a position that holds significant cultural and historical importance in the region. His appointment is expected to bring fresh leadership and development to Oyo town and its people.
As the new Alaafin of Oyo, Prince Akeem Owoade is poised to continue the legacy of his forebears and contribute to the socio-economic and cultural advancement of Oyo State.
His appointment marks a new chapter in the history of the Oyo monarchy, with hopes for positive change and progress.
