- The meeting followed the Governor’s receipt of the Supreme Court’s judgement
The ongoing political crisis in Rivers State has taken a new turn with Governor Siminalayi Fubara inviting members of the House of Assembly led by Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule to a crucial meeting.
This development, which could have significant implications for the state's governance, was revealed on Sunday, March 9, in a letter issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo.
The letter, which was circulated to the media in Port Harcourt, specifically addressed the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule. Titled “Meeting Between the Governor of Rivers State and the Honourable Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly,” the correspondence outlines the Governor's invitation for a meeting scheduled for Monday, March 10, 2025.
In the letter, Dr. Danagogo confirmed that the meeting was prompted by the Governor’s recent receipt of the Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgement, a ruling that has been a point of contention in the ongoing political struggle within the state. The meeting aims to address pressing matters concerning the administration of the state, as well as the future of the House of Assembly.
The topics outlined for discussion include the provision of an adequate and permanent space for the Amaewhule-led lawmakers to hold their sittings, as well as the payment of outstanding allowances and remunerations for the Honourable members. Additionally, the 2025 state budget is expected to be a major item on the agenda.
The statement from the Secretary to the State Government further reads: “I hereby write, in furtherance of His Excellency’s promise stated in my letter dated 5 March 2025, to notify you that His Excellency has received the Supreme Court judgement and has therefore directed me to invite you and your colleagues — the Honourable members of the Rivers State House of Assembly — to a meeting to discuss the following…”
The letter goes on to stress the need for the meeting to cover “provision of a befitting space for the Assembly’s sittings, payment of all outstanding remuneration or allowances of the Honourable members; Presentation of Budget and sundry matters.”
Governor Fubara’s letter concludes with an invitation for all members of the House, including the Speaker, to attend the meeting at 10 am on Monday at the Government House in Port Harcourt. The Governor expressed optimism for a fruitful dialogue, stating, “Many thanks, Sir, as we look forward to your kind attendance with a view to charting the way forward in the interest of the good people of Rivers State.”
