The Federal Government has declared Thursday, May 1, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Workers’ Day celebration. 

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement released on behalf of the Federal Government by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

In his address, Dr. Tunji-Ojo commended Nigerian workers for their unwavering dedication and sacrifice, acknowledging that their efforts have contributed significantly to the nation’s development and its standing among the comity of nations. 

He emphasised that “there is dignity in labour,” and noted that the commitment to one’s duty is essential to nation-building.

The Minister used the opportunity to encourage workers across all sectors to imbibe a culture of innovation and productivity. 

He urged them to raise the bar of their trades as a means of improving governance and ensuring that all Nigerians benefit from the nation’s wealth.

Reaffirming the administration's dedication to national development, Dr. Tunji-Ojo reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. 

He assured citizens and foreigners alike that the current administration remains committed to the security of lives and property throughout the country.

This year’s Workers’ Day theme focuses on promoting safety and health in the workplace in the context of a changing climate. 

In alignment with this, the Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to providing a safe and conducive environment for work, where every worker can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national progress.

He called on all stakeholders to adopt proactive strategies that mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, stressing the importance of enforcing sustainable practices and policies through collaborative efforts.

As Nigerians prepare to mark Workers’ Day, Dr. Tunji-Ojo encouraged citizens to remain hopeful, optimistic, and committed to excellence, efficiency, and equity in their daily contributions to the country's advancement.

He concluded by wishing all Nigerian workers a joyful and reflective celebration.

Democracy Day: Nigerian government declares June 12 as public holiday

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the federal government of Nigeria declared Wednesday, June 12, 2024, as a work-free day to celebrate democracy. 

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, via a statement from his ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr Aishetu Ndayako.
