- 560 individuals appointed as the governing councils of tertiary institutions in Nigeria
- The purpose of this is to achieve effective management of these higher institutions
- The governing councils will be officially inaugurated on Thursday, July 4
The Federal Government released the list of members of the governing council and boards of federal tertiary institutions on the night of Friday, June 28, three weeks after President Bola Tinubu's order for a review.
Since June 2023, federal government-owned institutions have been functioning without governing councils, following the president's directive for their dissolution.
560 individuals appointed into governing councils
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), however, issued the government a two-week ultimatum in May to reinstate councils whose tenures were active during the dissolution order and to reconstitute those whose tenures had ended.
Following this, 560 individuals were appointed to the governing councils of 51 federal universities, 24 federal colleges of education, and 37 federal polytechnics. Each council featured five members, including a chairman.
Governing councils to be inaugurated Thursday
The Permanent Secretary of General Services at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Nnamdi Mbaeri, stated on Friday, June 28, that the selection of these individuals aims to achieve effective management of Nigerian tertiary institutions nationwide.
The statement read, “His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, has approved the reconstitution of Governing Councils and Boards of Federal Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education for the effective management of Nigerian tertiary institutions across the country.”
The governing councils are scheduled to be officially inaugurated on July 4, 2024. This was disclosed on Monday, July 1 by Professor Aisha Maikudi, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja during her acceptance speech upon assuming leadership of the institution.
