Kayode Egbetokun has reportedly been removed as the Inspector-General of Police and replaced by Tunji Disu, according to a senior police officer who spoke to THE WHISTLER.
The source, who requested anonymity, said the development had been confirmed internally, although an official announcement was yet to be made at the time of filing this report.
“It’s confirmed, but an official announcement will be made,” the source said. “AIG Tunji Disu is the new IGP. Confirmed.”
In a follow-up message, the officer added: “It’s double confirmation.”
Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful as calls and messages seeking clarification were not responded to as of press time.
While the circumstances surrounding Egbetokun’s removal remain unclear, the reported appointment of Disu signals a significant leadership change within the Nigeria Police Force.
Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police prior to the reported elevation, is regarded as a seasoned officer with experience in key operational and investigative roles within the force. However, details regarding the effective date of the transition and the reasons for the change in leadership have yet to be officially disclosed.
Observers note that any change in the office of the Inspector-General carries far-reaching implications for policing strategy, internal administration and national security coordination, given the central role of the IGP in overseeing law enforcement operations across the country.
An official statement from the police authorities or the Presidency is expected to clarify the situation and confirm the appointment in due course.
