  • Melaye argued Nigeria’s presidency required unity-building beyond personal qualities and regional appeal

Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has described former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as “a fantastic man” who, in his view, is not fit to become Nigeria’s President. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, Melaye praised Obi’s personal qualities but expressed doubts about his ability to unite the nation.

“Let me even tell you, Peter Obi is a fantastic Nigerian. I have tremendous respect for him, and I’ve said it before, he is a fantastic person, but this is not his time to be President,” Melaye stated.

His comments come amid widespread speculation over Obi’s political ambitions, as the former governor of Anambra State has repeatedly declared his intention to contest the presidential election scheduled for 2027.

Melaye, who represented Kogi West in the National Assembly, emphasised that his assessment was not a personal attack on Obi but rather a reflection of the challenges he believes the nation faces. He stressed that the presidency requires not only integrity and competence but also the ability to bring together Nigeria’s diverse ethnic, regional, and political groups.

Obi, a former governor and prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, has attracted considerable support for his reformist agenda and his emphasis on fiscal responsibility, transparency, and youth engagement. However, critics argue that the political dynamics of the country, including entrenched party structures and regional considerations, may hinder his bid for the highest office.

Dino Melaye himself has had a turbulent political career. After leaving the National Assembly, he contested the Kogi State gubernatorial election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but was defeated by the incumbent governor, Ahmed Ododo. His own experience in state-level politics may have informed his perspective on the demands and complexities of national leadership.

Political analysts suggest that Melaye’s remarks, while complimentary, highlight a broader concern among Nigerian politicians regarding the challenges of governance in a deeply divided nation. Observers note that Nigeria’s presidency requires not only personal qualities but also strategic political alliances and nationwide appeal, areas where some candidates may struggle despite their individual capabilities.

As the 2027 election approaches, discussions about leadership, unity, and governance continue to dominate the national conversation. For now, Peter Obi remains a popular and respected figure in Nigerian politics, though questions about his electability at the national level persist.
