The Lagos State Detty December 2024/2025 Report shows that the state generated over $71.6 million in revenue from tourism, hospitality, and entertainment during the 2024 ‘Detty December’ celebrations.

The Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Idris Aregbe, while sharing details of the report to stakeholders during a weekend review, said hotels contributed over $44 million, while short-let apartments added $13 million to the total revenue.

Aregbe stated that tourism remains a major driver of the state’s economic growth, adding that the December festivities bring unity and vibrancy, and showcase the cultural spirit of Lagosians.

He said, “Tourism remains a vital driver of economic growth and cultural preservation for Lagos State, with the ‘Ember’ season playing a key role. This period represents unity, vibrancy, and celebration, fuelled by the dynamic spirit of Lagosians.
“From enterprising artisans in local markets to creative entrepreneurs in the entertainment and tourism sectors, the resilience and ingenuity of Lagosians lie at the heart of its success.
“The participation of residents, visitors from other states, and international tourists has been fundamental in establishing Lagos as a cultural and tourism hub.”

Lessons for 2025 Lagos Tourism is Rising campaign

Aregbe said the insights from the 2024 Detty December festivities would be studied and applied to the 2025 Lagos Tourism is Rising campaign to position the state as a tourism hub in Nigeria.

The governor’s aide said, “As Lagos looks ahead to 2025 with the Lagos Tourism is Rising campaign, the goal remains clear: to build on this momentum, celebrate our cultural richness, and solidify Lagos as a beacon of tourism, culture, and economic excellence.”

He also commended the hospitable spirit of Lagosians and industry stakeholders, as well as the Lagos State government for its dedication to developing Lagos as a cultural and tourism hub.

Detty December events in Lagos

During the yuletide season, Lagos played host to several events that attracted a mammoth crowd, especially from Nigerians in the diaspora, popularly known as IJGBs (I Just Got Back).

These events included the Mrs Universe Africa event, Greater Lagos Fiesta, music concerts, fashion shows, cultural exhibitions, celebrity visits, culinary events, Spotify Wrapped Concert, Lungu Boy Block Party, Rhythm Unplugged, Entertainment Week Lagos, Joeboy, The La Vida Experience, African Fashion Week, and Fashion Souk.
