A renowned businesswoman and socialite, Princess Kadijat Adebisi Edionseri, widely known as 'Cash Madam', has passed away at the age of 89 after a brief illness. Her death occurred on Sunday, 5th January 2025, in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

The announcement of her passing was made through a statement released by one of her children, Dr Adebayo Adebowale, on behalf of the family. The statement expressed deep sorrow while celebrating Edionseri’s remarkable life.

"With deep gratitude to Allah for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Princess Kadijat Abike Adebisi Edionseri (née Elegbede), who returned to her creator on January 5, 2025, at the age of 89, following a brief illness. 

"Her life was a shining example of grace, dignity, and unwavering faith. Princess Edionseri touched the lives of many through her wisdom, kindness, and dedication to both her family and her community," the statement read

The family described her as a source of inspiration whose legacy of resilience, love, and faith in Allah would continue to guide them and future generations.

A funeral service will take place today, Monday 6th January 2025, at 4 pm at her residence in Abeokuta.

Princess Edionseri, fondly referred to as 'Cash Madam', was not only an admired business mogul but also a well-loved philanthropist. 

Known for her entrepreneurial spirit, she was a dominant figure in the fabric sales industry, with numerous shops across Nigeria, which her children now manage. 

Her business acumen earned her widespread respect, and her success became legendary in her community.

Her nickname, 'Cash Madam', was popularised by a tribute in the 1970s by the iconic Nigerian musician Chief Ebenezer Obey. 

In the album Board Members, Obey sang her praises, helping to immortalise her moniker.

Her business operations were so successful that it was said she always had cash on hand in abundance that even bank cashiers would visit her store to collect money directly.

The late Princess Edionseri's philanthropic efforts and commitment to the socio-economic development of Egbaland and Ogun State earned her widespread admiration. 


Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State expressed his profound sorrow at her passing, describing her as a pioneering entrepreneur whose legacy had made a lasting impact on society.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, Governor Abiodun offered his condolences to the family, acknowledging Edionseri’s immense contributions to Ogun State’s development. 

"Her passing is a tremendous loss, but her influence as a business pioneer and social figure will continue to resonate for years to come," Abiodun said.

He praised Princess Edionseri's exceptional achievements, noting that her pioneering spirit had inspired many entrepreneurs and social leaders across the region. 

"Her legacy transcends her lifetime. Her contributions to the business landscape and her vibrant social engagements will serve as enduring reference points," the governor added.
