  • Three-time head of state, Muhammadu Buhari, reiterated his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC)
  • He emphasised his gratitude for the party and expressed respect for the APC's founding members
  • This came after former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, claimed to have consulted Buhari about leaving the APC

Former President Muhammadu Buhari reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a statement issued by his former spokesperson Garba Shehu.

The statement, which did not directly address former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, followed El-Rufai’s recent claim that he sought Buhari’s permission to leave the APC for the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Buhari reaffirms loyalty to APC, emphasises ongoing support

In the statement, Buhari emphasised his steadfast allegiance to the APC, stressing that he would never abandon the party that facilitated his two terms in office. "I am an APC member, and I like to be addressed as such," the former president stated.

He further declared his intent to continue supporting and promoting the party. "I will do whatever I can to popularise the party," he added.
Shehu also highlighted Buhari’s gratitude towards the APC, acknowledging the party's significant role in his political journey. "He holds deep appreciation for the support the party gave him before and during his tenure as president," Shehu wrote, quoting Buhari’s sentiments of never asking for anything more from the party.

The former President also expressed respect for the APC’s founding members, recognising their sacrifices in establishing a strong political movement that upholds Nigeria’s constitution and democracy.

El-Rufai claims he informed Buhari before leaving APC

Recall that El-Rufai had claimed in an interview with BBC Hausa that he had informed Buhari of his decision to leave the APC, insisting that he had always sought Buhari’s approval for major political actions during his tenure as Kaduna governor.

El-Rufai stated, "I left the APC with his knowledge," and revealed that he would consult Buhari before making significant decisions, such as appointing commissioners.

While El-Rufai denied having a political godfather, he admitted to seeking advice from various elders, including Buhari, who he identified as his primary political mentor.

Despite feeling "blindsided" by President Bola Tinubu’s treatment, El-Rufai stated that he had no regrets supporting him.
