- ALGON had endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in 2027
- The association had cited improved grassroots governance under his administration
- It had also suspended three local government chairmen over alleged misconduct
The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing continuity and improvements in grassroots governance.
The endorsement was part of resolutions reached at ALGON’s 54th Expanded National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja, which brought together representatives from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The meeting, chaired by ALGON National President Bello Lawal, also had in attendance past leaders of the association and state chapter executives.
A formal motion backing Tinubu’s re-election bid was moved by former ALGON President Alabi Kolade David and seconded by the Plateau State ALGON chairman Anani Hamisu Mohammed.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting on Sunday, ALGON said its endorsement was based on the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which it claimed had strengthened fiscal capacity and improved autonomy for local governments across the country.
The association added that continuity under Tinubu would further deepen grassroots governance and enhance development at the local level.
However, the meeting also produced disciplinary action, as ALGON announced the suspension of three local government chairmen over alleged misconduct.
Those suspended include Zakari Iliyasu, Chairman of Agwara Local Government Area and ALGON chairman in Niger State; Abubakar Danladi Abdullahi, Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area and ALGON chairman in Kwara State; and Abba Shehu Tambuwal, Chairman of Tambuwal Local Government Council and ALGON chairman in Sokoto State.
The association stated that the officials were suspended over allegations of impersonation, actions deemed contrary to ALGON’s interests, and abuse of constitutional provisions.
ALGON further warned ministries, departments and agencies, state governments, and development partners against engaging the suspended officials in any official capacity, stating that they no longer had the authority to represent the association.
The body also passed a vote of confidence in its national president, reaffirming support for the current leadership and its direction.
The dual outcome of endorsement and internal disciplinary action highlights ALGON’s ongoing efforts to assert cohesion while playing a more visible role in national political discourse ahead of the 2027 elections.
