The Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has called for a credible and transparent governorship election in the state on August 15, emphasising the need to safeguard the integrity of the ballot.
The governor made the remarks on Monday while hosting members of the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Representatives at the Government House in Osogbo.
Addressing the visiting lawmakers, Adeleke described the upcoming election as a vital democratic exercise, not only for Osun State but also for Nigeria’s electoral credibility. He stressed that the respect of citizens’ votes is essential for strengthening democratic institutions in the country.
“Credible election is not optional but a compulsory process to safeguard the democratic system,” he said, highlighting that the poll must reflect the true will of the electorate.
Adeleke added that the Osun governorship election would draw both national and international attention, being one of the last major elections before the 2027 general polls. “For us in Osun State, August 15 is a critical phase for national democratic evolution. As the last major election before 2027, Osun is in the eyes of the nation and the world,” he noted.
The governor urged all stakeholders to ensure a free, fair, and transparent voting process, stating that this would reinforce public trust in the electoral system.
During the meeting, Adeleke also highlighted the achievements of his administration, pointing out that his government has been completing abandoned projects and initiating new ones across sectors such as health, education, agriculture, infrastructure, and economic development. He noted efforts to address inherited financial obligations, including unpaid salaries and pension arrears, alongside programmes aimed at improving service delivery.
The Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee, Jeremiah Umar, commended the governor for the ongoing infrastructural developments in the state. He cited flyovers across Osogbo and other towns, as well as a dual carriageway under construction opposite the State Government Secretariat, as clear evidence of progress.
Umar further observed that residents engaged by the delegation praised improvements in public services, including renovated primary healthcare centres and enhanced performance by state-owned universities.
Governor Adeleke’s call underscores the significance of a credible electoral process as Osun prepares for a poll that is being closely watched as a benchmark ahead of the 2027 general elections.
