The Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has expressed confidence that the ongoing remodelling of Osogbo Stadium will meet international standards, including those set by FIFA, upon completion.
The governor made the remarks following a project review session on the stadium upgrade, according to a statement shared by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Monday. He revealed that the redevelopment project would significantly expand the stadium’s seating capacity from 4,000 to 15,000.
Adeleke noted that the initiative is aimed not only at modernising the facility but also at positioning Osun State as a viable destination for both local and international sporting events.
“Upon completion, Osun will be qualified to host local and international events. Sports development will take a new tone,” he said. “Our young population will have a big supportive platform to develop their talents.”
He emphasised that the involvement of both local and international technical experts is central to ensuring the project meets global benchmarks. According to him, adherence to recognised standards is critical to integrating the state into mainstream sports development.
“In remodelling the stadium, we must satisfy global standards. I am happy with the involvement of local and international experts to ensure we meet FIFA and all associated standards. This is the way to go to finally integrate Osun into the mainstream of sports development in the country,” he added.
Beyond infrastructure, Adeleke disclosed that the state government is working to strengthen institutional frameworks that support sports development. These include efforts to operationalise the Osun State Sports Trust Fund and the Osun State Sports Commission, aimed at improving funding, governance, and long-term planning.
“As a sport-loving governor, I am eager to ensure that the Osun Sport Trust Fund becomes operational. We are working around the clock to meet legal requirements and develop appropriate policy frameworks,” he said.
The governor also outlined a broader vision for a modernised sports ecosystem in Osun, highlighting plans for improved facilities, enhanced workforce structures, and increased opportunities for athletes across the state.
He commended contractors handling the project for their progress so far and praised Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, who also serves as Commissioner for Sports, for his role in advancing the initiative.
The stadium upgrade is widely seen as a key step in revitalising sports in Osun State, with expectations that it will create new opportunities for youth engagement and talent development.
