  • A Binani-aligned faction had resigned en masse from the ADC, citing a collapse of internal democracy
  • Stakeholders had rejected recent party congresses, alleging manipulation and disregard for court rulings
  • The group had initiated plans to defect to a new political platform ahead of the 2027 elections

Fresh divisions have surfaced within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, as a prominent faction loyal to Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani announced its mass resignation from the party, citing what it described as a “total collapse of internal democracy.”

The decision followed a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held at the residence of Hon. Mijiyewa Umaru Kugama, where party figures from the state’s three senatorial zones gathered to deliberate on the growing crisis. Their communiqué signals a potentially significant political realignment ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

In a strongly worded statement, the group accused ADC leadership at both state and national levels of undermining democratic principles and imposing illegitimate party structures. According to the stakeholders, recent internal processes have eroded trust and rendered the party ineffective as a credible opposition platform.

“The actions of the party leadership have destroyed internal democracy, undermined the rule of law, and rendered the party structure in Adamawa State illegitimate and unacceptable,” the communiqué stated.

Central to the dispute are the party’s recently concluded congresses, which the faction claims were manipulated under the leadership of Ishaya Bauka. The group alleged that these congresses were imposed against the will of the majority and conducted in defiance of existing court rulings and injunctions.

Describing the situation as a “dangerous precedent of lawlessness,” the stakeholders further accused party officials of sidelining key members through systematic exclusion, intimidation, and imposition.

In a series of decisive resolutions, the bloc passed a vote of no confidence in the ADC leadership and declared its “immediate and irreversible resignation en masse.” It also rejected all outcomes of the disputed congresses, describing them as null and void.

“We refuse to be part of a system that thrives on injustice, impunity, and illegality,” the statement added.

While the group has yet to formally announce its new political affiliation, it confirmed plans to align with another platform. Senator Binani has been mandated to lead the transition and coordinate a unified political strategy ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Political analysts believe the development could significantly reshape Adamawa’s political landscape, particularly as Binani is widely regarded as a key contender in the 2027 governorship race.

The communiqué further outlined plans for a coordinated defection structure spanning polling units, wards, and local government areas, alongside intensified grassroots mobilisation efforts.

Observers warn that the crisis reflects broader tensions within opposition parties across Nigeria, raising concerns that unresolved disputes may weaken party cohesion in the lead-up to future elections.

Peter Obi expresses uncertainty over ADC presidential ticket ahead of 2027 elections

Meanwhile, TheRadar previously reported that Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has voiced doubts over his ability to secure the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a video message shared with his supporters, Obi acknowledged that obtaining the party’s nomination is not guaranteed. “Someone asked me how I know for sure that the ADC will give me the presidential ticket. I cannot be certain. What matters is that we are committed to a cause,” he said.
