The Adamawa State House of Assembly on Monday screened and confirmed three commissioner-nominees submitted by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri last week.
The nominations follow the resignation of Adamu Atiku, the first son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who stepped down from his role as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development after Governor Fintiri defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The confirmed commissioner-nominees are Sali Idris representing Maiha Local Government Area, Muhammed Suleiman for Mubi North, and Chubado Mohammed for Jada Local Government Area.
Presiding over the session, Speaker Bathiya Wesley reminded the nominees that the constitutional duty of the House is to ensure that individuals nominated for public service are credible and capable of delivering quality services to the people of Adamawa State.
Governor Fintiri had submitted the three names to the Assembly on Tuesday, just a day after Adamu Atiku resigned from the cabinet. Adamu Atiku reportedly stepped down after refusing to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
Speaking exclusively to The PUNCH after his screening, Muhammed Suleiman, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Energy Development, praised the governor for the nomination. “The Fintiri administration is clearly different from past governments. You can see practically on the ground, his projects are speaking directly to the people of Adamawa State,” he said.
Suleiman added that the governor’s decision to extend his service reflects confidence in his abilities. “I retired in 2024, but the governor extended my service for one year and after that, he extended it again for six months. This shows that the governor has confidence in me,” he said.
