The ruling Accord Party in Osun State has announced its readiness to fully comply with the 2026 Electoral Act amendments, which require all political parties to register their members electronically. The party said it has already commenced a nationwide e-registration and revalidation exercise to align with the new legal framework.

In a statement on Wednesday signed by its National Chairman, Maxwell Mgbudem, Accord urged all members across Nigeria, including those living abroad and new prospective members, to take advantage of the exercise and secure their updated membership cards. Members who previously joined via the old platform were also encouraged to participate, as the e-registration process requires more comprehensive information.

“This aligns with the new electoral governance framework, which establishes a digital membership register to identify genuine members of our great party and to accredit them for congresses, primaries, and conventions as we diligently prepare for the 2027 general election,” the statement read.

Mgbudem emphasised that the party leadership had issued strict instructions to ensure the smooth implementation of the e-registration process, highlighting the urgency of the exercise. Party executives at ward, local government, state, and zonal levels have been directed to mobilise members for an extensive membership drive that will culminate in Accord securing a competitive edge ahead of the 2027 polls.

DAILY POST reports that as the 2027 general elections approach, the e-registration requirement introduced by the Electoral Act 2026 has caused concern among opposition parties. Some, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have warned that the rule could narrow the democratic space and potentially limit participation in internal party processes.

Accord’s leadership, however, has framed the move as a necessary step towards transparency and accountability in party membership, stressing that the digital register will help ensure that only legitimate members participate in party congresses, primaries, and conventions.

“This exercise is not just about compliance; it is about strengthening our party’s internal democracy, ensuring transparency, and preparing our structure for the demands of the 2027 general election,” the statement added.

By taking proactive steps to implement the e-registration system, Accord seeks to demonstrate its commitment to good governance within political parties and to set a precedent for orderly, technology-driven membership management ahead of Nigeria’s next national elections.
