Donald Trump was officially sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, marking his dramatic return to office in what was described as a “historic political comeback.”
The ceremony took place in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., where Trump, 78, took the oath of office on Monday, January 20.
Standing at the podium in the Capitol Rotunda, Trump’s inaugural speech, lasting approximately 30 minutes, was relatively brief compared to his usual standard.
He began by declaring that the “golden age of America begins” with his return to the presidency. "The golden age of America begins right now. From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected," Trump stated.
Throughout his speech, Trump hinted at several executive actions that he intends to pursue.
TheRadar compiled eight key takeaways from his inaugural address below:
8 takeaways from Donald Trump’s inaugural speech
1. Trump declares only male and female genders will be recognised:
The newly inaugurated president indicated plans to reverse former President Joe Biden’s policies on diversity, equity, and inclusion, confirming that only male and female genders would be recognised under his administration.
“As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male and female.”
He also made it clear that he would end efforts to “socially engineer” race and gender throughout society.
“ I will also end the government policy of trying to socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life. We will forge a society that is colour-blind and merit-based,” he said.
2. Trump pledges to deploy national troops for immigration enforcement:
The Republican vowed to take strong action on immigration by declaring a national emergency at the southern border, as he did in 2019, and deploying national troops to assist with immigration enforcement.
He repeated his accusations that foreign countries were sending criminals and individuals with mental health issues across the U.S. border and pledged to designate drug cartels as “foreign terrorist organisations.”
He also promised to restore the “Remain in Mexico” policy and end the practice of catch-and-release. Additionally, he said he would send troops to the border to combat what he described as an “invasion” and use the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to target foreign criminal gangs and networks.
3. Trump proposes Canada as US 51st state, others
He repeatedly made calls for expanding US territory beyond its current borders. In Panama, he demanded the “return” of the Panama Canal, arguing that unfair trade practices had been imposed on the U.S. by the waterway.
To the north, he proposed that Canada join the US as its “51st state.” He has also called for renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” and changing Denali back to its former name, “Mount McKinley.”
“ The United States will once again consider itself a growing nation, one that increases our wealth, expands our territory, builds our cities, raises our expectations and carries our flag into new and beautiful horizons,” Trump stated.
4. Trump promises to restore free speech in America
Trump framed the United States as a nation in crisis, burdened by censorship, a recurring narrative that has been prominent in conservative discourse in recent years.
He pledged to sign an executive order that would immediately end government censorship and ensure the return of free speech in the United States.
“After years and years of illegal and unconstitutional federal efforts to restrict free expression, I will also sign an executive order to immediately stop all government censorship and bring back free speech to America,” Trump said.
5. Trump targets foreign nations with new tariff and tax proposals
Trump revealed his plan to restore the U.S. as "a manufacturing nation once again," promising to revamp trade policies to safeguard American workers. He also proposed creating the External Revenue Service to collect tariffs and duties on imported goods.
“Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens,” he said.
6. Trump promises US will stop wars, foster global unity
Trump pledged to rebuild the U.S. military to unmatched strength, aiming to restore America's status as the world's leading power.
“My proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and unifier. That’s what I want to be: a peacemaker and a unifier,” he said. That spirit will extend beyond the US’s borders, he stated.
He further said, “ We will be a nation like no other full of compassion, courage and exceptionalism. Our power will stop all wars and bring a new spirit of unity to a world that has been angry, violent, and totally unpredictable.”
7. Trump criticises outgoing administration, in front of Biden, Harris
Despite promising in his inaugural address to be a "peacemaker and unifier," and expressing that he hoped this would define his legacy, Trump sharply criticised the government in front of Biden, saying it was incapable of managing simple domestic problems while stumbling into a long list of global catastrophes.
His remarks targeted crime, immigration, and suggested doubts about U.S. support for Ukraine in its battle against Russia.
"We have a government that has given unlimited funding to the defence of foreign borders but refuses to defend American borders or, more importantly, its own people," Trump stated.
8. Trump says he was "saved by God" to make America great again
Trump recalled the assassination attempt on his life in July of the previous year during the presidential campaign. He stated that he had been "saved by God" for a singular purpose.
"Those who wish to stop our cause have tried to take my freedom and indeed take my life. Just a few months ago, in a beautiful Pennsylvania field, an assassin's bullet ripped through my ear, but I felt then and believe even more so now, that my life was saved for a reason.
"I was saved by God to make America great again,” Trump stated.
