5 state governors pardon prisoners to mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary

Over 128 prisoners serving various prison terms have been pardoned in commemoration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebration

The decision to free these prisoners was seen as a symbolic action aligned with the spirit of freedom that Independence Day represents.

The following are five state governors who released prisoners to celebrate Nigeria at 64

1. Governor Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State pardons 117 convicts 

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State announced on Tuesday, October 1 that the decision to grant clemency to inmates was based on recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. 

Of the inmates benefitting from this initiative, 19 were fully pardoned, while others had their death sentences converted to life imprisonment. Additionally, several inmates received reduced sentences, creating opportunities for them to reintegrate into society.

The statement was issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Ebenezer Adeniyan.

Dr Olakayode Ajulo (SAN), the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice who also chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, said:

“The council’s deliberations were informed by insights from correctional authorities, legal experts, and distinguished community members, focusing on factors such as the nature of the offences, length of incarceration, age, health, and behaviour of the inmates.

“The compassionate gesture underscores Governor Aiyedatiwa’s unwavering commitment to decongest correctional facilities in Ondo State and is a vital component of ongoing justice sector reforms.”

2. Governor Fintiri of Adamawa State pardons two inmates

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri pardoned two inmates who were serving various sentences. This decision was made following the recommendations of the Council on the Prerogative of Mercy and aligns with Section 212 (i) (d) of the Constitution of Nigeria.

Governor Fintiri ordered their immediate release and encouraged the former inmates to take advantage of this opportunity for personal reform and to contribute positively to society. 

He advised them to adhere to the law, seek rehabilitation, pursue education and skills development, and reconnect with their families and communities, urging them to express gratitude for their second chance.

3. Governor Mutfwang of Plateau State pardons five inmates

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State announced the pardon of five inmates serving different sentences within the state.

The Governor emphasised that clemency was extended to those inmates who demonstrated considerable improvement in their behaviour and conduct during their time in prison. 

He encouraged the public to embody the values of peace, unity, and compassion, especially in light of the challenges facing the nation.

“Fellow citizens, in the exercise of my prerogative of mercy as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and in line with the recommendations of the Plateau State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, I have granted pardon to five persons who have served various jail terms and have significantly demonstrated good conduct over the years.

“This day holds profound significance for every Nigerian, as it reminds us of our shared destiny and the resilient spirit that has kept us together through trials and triumphs.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to the brave men and women who fought for our independence and to the founding fathers whose vision laid the foundation for a united Nigeria. Their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering belief in a free and prosperous nation continue to inspire us. We salute their memory and remain committed to the ideals for which they stood, Governor Mutfwang stated. 

4. Governor Yahaya of Gombe State pardons 23 inmates

Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has announced the clemency of 23 inmates as part of his goodwill address to the citizens during recent celebrations.

The clemency includes the release of some inmates and the reduction of various sentences. Specifically, two inmates with life sentences will now serve 15 years, while two others on death row will now face life imprisonment. One detainee’s sentence has been adjusted to 10 years, and four additional death row inmates will now serve 15 years.

Governor Yahaya emphasised that these measures were informed by recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. He expressed optimism that those granted clemency would take this opportunity to rehabilitate and reintegrate into their communities.

5. Governor Alia of Benue State pardons six inmates

Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has approved the release of six inmates based on the recommendations of the state’s Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, led by Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Fidelis Mnyim.

During the announcement, Attorney General Mnyim, speaking on behalf of the governor, clarified that the decision was based on recommendations from community members, including clergy and others who had engaged with the inmates while they were incarcerated.

“Having observed their sincerity of heart and commitment to change, the Governor of Benue State has graciously freed six inmates based on the recommendation of the Judicial Commission on the Prerogative of Mercy,” Mnyim stated.
