- Omoyele Sowore confirms plans to run in the 2027 presidential election
- The African Action Congress says its presidential primaries will hold next week
- Sowore revealed that the party will determine who emerges as its candidate
The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has confirmed that he will contest the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, May 22, the activist and publisher said the AAC would conduct its presidential primaries next week.
When asked whether he would emerge as the party’s sole candidate, Sowore avoided giving a direct answer, insisting that the decision rests with party members.
“Well, let the party decide who their candidates are,” he said.
Sowore also addressed the ongoing digital membership registration exercise introduced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, noting that the AAC had yet to submit its final register.
According to him, a recent court ruling allows political parties to reopen their registration portals even after submission.
“We haven’t finally submitted, and that’s what this court judgment says. So if you have submitted now, the court says you can reopen your portal and start again,” he explained.
“But we never stopped anyway.”
The former presidential candidate stated that the AAC pioneered online membership registration in 2018 before it became widely adopted by other political parties.
He further claimed that during the 2022 registration process, the AAC was the only political party to submit a complete register to INEC.
While speaking on Nigeria’s political landscape, Sowore criticised several prominent politicians, including President Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde and Rotimi Amaechi, accusing them of contributing to Nigeria’s poverty, insecurity, and economic hardship.
Sowore, widely known for his activism and leadership of Sahara Reporters, has consistently presented himself as an alternative voice against Nigeria’s traditional political establishment.
Although his 2023 presidential bid under the AAC recorded low votes nationwide, supporters see his repeated participation in elections as a sustained push for political reform and accountability.
Critics, however, argue that his campaigns remain more symbolic and protest-driven than electorally competitive.
Makinde declares 2027 Presidential bid under APM amid Oyo political realignment
Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, had officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the next general elections.
The declaration came shortly after the governor led the Taminu Turaki faction of the PDP in Oyo State to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the APM as part of a strategic alliance ahead of the 2027 elections.
