Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has been cleared to participate in the presidential primary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general election.
The party’s National Screening Committee confirmed Obi’s clearance after a screening exercise held in Abuja on Tuesday, May 19.
Chairman of the committee, Sam Egwu, announced the decision in a video shared on the party’s official X account on Wednesday, May 20, stating that Obi fulfilled all constitutional and legal requirements needed to contest for the presidency.
According to Egwu, the committee carefully reviewed Obi’s qualifications and was satisfied with his responses during the exercise.
“This is to certify that, following the screening of His Excellency Peter Obi by the National Screening Committee of the Nigeria Democratic Congress… he is hereby cleared to contest in the presidential primaries of the party for the 2027 presidential election,” Egwu stated.
Reacting through his official X account, Obi disclosed that the screening lasted more than two and a half hours, during which party officials examined his academic records, NYSC documents, and age declaration papers.
“Yesterday, May 19, in Abuja, I attended the presidential screening organised by our party, which took over two and a half hours. They carefully reviewed all my documents, including my degree certificates, NYSC credentials, and age declarations,” Obi wrote.
The former Anambra State governor added that he was also questioned about his plans for Nigeria and the leadership direction he intends to provide if elected.
“During the process, I also addressed questions regarding my vision for a new Nigeria and the type of leadership our nation urgently needs right now,” he said.
Following the screening, Obi confirmed that he officially received the party’s presidential nomination form after being cleared by the committee.
He also praised the screening panel led by Egwu, describing the exercise as professional, transparent, and credible.
“I would like to commend the screening committee, led by former governor Sam Egwu, for their thorough and professional approach. Additionally, I appreciate our party’s leadership for upholding the democratic process,” Obi added.
The development comes as opposition parties intensify consultations, coalition talks, and internal preparations ahead of the 2027 general election.

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, had officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the next general elections.
The declaration came shortly after the governor led the Taminu Turaki faction of the PDP in Oyo State to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the APM as part of a strategic alliance ahead of the 2027 elections.
