  • The move had followed a Supreme Court ruling nullifying the Ibadan convention
  • The decision had deepened internal divisions within the opposition party

The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, has announced the appointment of a 13-member interim National Working Committee (NWC), further intensifying the party’s ongoing leadership crisis.

Wabara disclosed the development on Monday, stating that the decision was taken in line with the party’s constitution and aimed at addressing what he described as a leadership vacuum.

According to him, the vacuum emerged following a ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria which upheld the nullification of the party’s Ibadan National Convention. The judgment, he argued, invalidated previous leadership structures, necessitating the formation of an interim body to steer the affairs of the party.

The decision to constitute the interim NWC was reached during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting convened by the faction aligned with Tanimu Turaki. The meeting took place at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

Party insiders indicate that the move is part of broader efforts by the Wabara-led Board of Trustees to reassert control and stabilise the PDP amid internal divisions that have persisted in recent months.

However, the development is likely to deepen existing factional tensions within the opposition party, as rival groups continue to contest legitimacy and leadership authority.

Analysts note that the emergence of parallel structures within the PDP could complicate efforts to present a united front ahead of future elections, particularly as the party seeks to reposition itself as a viable alternative at the national level.

The appointment of an interim NWC is expected to trigger further reactions from other party stakeholders, especially those who may not recognise the authority of the Wabara-led bloc.

The PDP, once Nigeria’s dominant political force, has in recent years grappled with recurring internal crises, including disputes over leadership, convention outcomes, and legal challenges. Observers warn that unresolved conflicts could weaken the party’s organisational strength and electoral prospects if not carefully managed.
