The Labour Party has announced April 28 as the date for its presidential primary, as part of a broader schedule of internal party activities ahead of its national convention.
This was disclosed in a letter addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), signed by the party’s Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, and made available to journalists in Abuja on Friday, April 3.
According to the timetable, ward congresses will take place on April 23, followed by Local Government Area (LGA) congresses on April 24, and state congresses on April 25.
The presidential primary will then be conducted during the party’s national convention on April 28 at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, Abia State.
Usman explained that the notification to INEC aligns with the provisions of Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), INEC’s regulations and guidelines for political parties, as well as Section 223(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
She noted that these provisions require political parties to formally notify the commission of their congresses, conventions, and meetings.
“The Commission may kindly recall that the Party, in an earlier correspondence duly acknowledged, notified the Commission of the postponement of its previously scheduled activities to enable broader participation of members.
“Particularly, to allow for the completion of the ongoing digital membership registration process.
“Accordingly, the party has now approved a new timetable for the conduct of its Elective Congresses and National Convention.”
Reaffirming the schedule, Usman said:
“While the national convention has been scheduled for April 28 at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, Abia.”
She urged INEC to inform its state offices to ensure proper monitoring of the party’s activities.
Usman also reaffirmed the party’s dedication to democratic principles, assuring stakeholders of its continued commitment to Nigeria’s democratic development.
