The former United States vice president, Kamala Harris, has offered her strongest indication yet that she may return to the presidential race, telling a Democratic audience she is considering a 2028 White House bid.

Speaking on Friday, April 10, at an event organised by National Action Network, founded by Al Sharpton, Harris stopped short of making an official announcement but made her intentions clear.

The 61-year-old Democrat, who lost the 2024 election to Donald Trump, drew loud reactions from party supporters in New York when asked about her future plans.

“I might, I might, I’m thinking about it,” she said.

Harris, who served as vice president under Joe Biden, used her experience in office to reinforce her readiness for leadership.

“I spent countless hours in my West Wing office, footsteps away from the Oval Office. I spent countless hours in the Oval Office, in the Situation Room. I know what the job is. And I know what it requires,” she said.

After largely staying out of the spotlight following her 2024 defeat, Harris has gradually re-emerged, making strategic appearances and visits across southern US states, moves seen by allies as keeping her political options open.

The National Action Network gathering is increasingly becoming an early testing ground for potential 2028 contenders, particularly as Black voters remain a critical force within the Democratic Party.

During her speech, Harris also took aim at Trump’s leadership and broader governance issues.

“The status quo is not working, and hasn’t been working for a lot of people for a long time,” she said.

While early polls suggest Harris benefits from strong name recognition, the path to securing the Democratic nomination remains uncertain, with other prominent figures expected to join the race.

She concluded by stressing the importance of public service over personal ambition:

“The American people have right to expect that anyone who wants to run for office and be a leader, that it can’t be about themselves and what they want for themselves. It’s got to be about the American people, and that’s how I think of it.”

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that in a stunning political comeback, Donald Trump had won the 2024 United States presidential election, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris.

Harris emphasised the importance of a peaceful transfer of power, confirming that she had spoken to Trump and assured him of her cooperation in ensuring a smooth transition.

During her concession speech, Harris thanked her family, President Joe Biden, Governor Tim Walz, and her team of volunteers, expressing pride in the campaign she led. "I am so proud of the race we ran and the way we ran it," she said.
